the memory stick readers are between 50-75 US. not bad, but still an extra cost. some cams come with readers or pcmcia cards for laptops...check the contents of each package.
sony camcorders are good...two problems though...they are pricey and sony offers dozens of slightly varried models that all look alike with minor variations in features. and last and most importantly....DV CAM or MINI DV. most sony cams use DV CAM as a format which is a proprietary version of mini dv that only lets you get 45 minutes per hour long tape, and precludes you from using any mini dv tapes you already have recorded....or sending a tape to somebody who has a mini dv cam. how this affects what software you need im not sure....but it does add a kink to compatibility. oh and one more...sony DV tapes have a small micro chip in them that reacts with the camera....so surprise surprise on some sony cams you will get lowered performance if you dont use sony tapes...and you guessed it they cost more.
in short my opinion is that sony is the metric system in 1800's industrial revolution London.
as for computers if you already have a MAC keep it and later get a better one. MAC is the best for editing vid....and is and will be the standard for authoring DVD. I dont have one yet, but hope to soon.
We dont have DVD yet...but were working on it. what we have now is VCD....a stopgap between vhs and dvd...not as good as dvd but more functional and cross platform compatible that vhs.
VSI got slammed for dvd because of austins attitude toward it. when he said that dvd was here to stay and pretty much said that if you dont go out and get a dvd player your a peasant and not worth his time. pretty much his attitude towards anything....and thats what gets him in trouble about everything...public relations.
also vsi screwed up by jumping into dvd with both feet without looking to see the pool was frozen over. he payed umpteen thousand dollars to have glass masters made...bad move in an industry where selling 25 copies of a vid is considered smash sales. what he should have done is start with getting a mac and making dvd-r's to start with...not as pretty asthetically as factory mastered dvd's...but that would have let him sell dvd's for less that $100 each!!!!
I think our corner of the world is ready for dvd....but baby steps not signing up for the boston marathon just cuz foot locker has running shoes on sale.
