Your point about the Chinese woman getting disapproving looks while smoking actually re-inforces the point that the surveys are innaccurate. It proves that generally Asian women prefer to hide their smoking due to social customs, and this certainly includes hiding the fact that they smoke from surveyors. In Asia it is rare to see girls smoke in the open, but they will smoke in private or in night-clubs etc. The slowly increasing rate of female smoking in the more recent surveys is a reflection of the fact that as these countries become more westernised, younger women are becoming less shy about admitting that they smoke. If you ever were to visit a country such as Australia, with a very large number of Asian students, you would quickly discover just how many young Asian girls actually smoke (they don't tend to worry about hiding their smoking when they are abroad).
