Posted by Jason on 10/28/2001, 4:27 pm Young women are most likely to smoke in Japan. In most other Asian countries, old women aged 65+ are most likely to smoke, while smoking is extremely rare among younger women. There are some encouraging reports that teen girls in China are breaking the taboo and starting to smoke in rather large numbers. This is a brand new development. According to recently released U.S statistics.7.1% of Asian-American women smoked in 1999.This is the lowest of any ethnic group. This is closer to Asian female smoking rates than the 22% overall female U.S average.
The female smoking rate is generally higher in Japan than the rest of Asia.It is only 3% in Korea,5% in China, and 4% in Vietnam.
