Posted by CP on 7/5/2001, 10:49 pm Okay, onto the new season's news. Only about half of the series have had their premier episodes on the air, but there's already a good smoker. And a surprise, to me anyway. It was on last night (Wednesday). It's on in the 10 to 10:54 time slot on the Nihon Television network. It's called Beauty 7, with the Beauty written in Japanese katakana. The smoker? The 26 year old character played by the actress Fukuda Uno. Funny thing was, as I was watching the show, I was thinking how unrealistic it was for them to show 7 young ladies working in a beauty makeover shop and none of them smoke. Then I saw her character come on and I told myself it would be a cold day in hell before they would have her smoke on the show. (Because I've never seen her smoke and she's been in a lot of dramas.) But in one of the early scenes she was shown holding a lit all-white. Then a new character, maybe mid-thirties, is shown coming into the beautique and telling them what they are doing wrong. The first thing she says, to Uno's character, is that she can smell the tobacco smoke on her smock and that smell "rubs" off on the female customers. Okay, cut the chase. In a later scene, Uno's character takes a drag from her all-white, with a noticable reddening of the ash (even through the poor reception I got last night), and blew the smoke in the general direction of a male character standing in front of her. G.I. Joe, hope you got a TV! And you PH? Another show had promise, but I didn't see any smoking in the first episode. It's called "Dekichatta Kekkon", which roughly translates as "shotgun marriage". In the TV Guide drama special edition (with a page dedicated to each show and pics and info for each character), it said that the girl (20) who gets pregnant loves drinking and smoking. But, as I said, no smoking yet. I'll keep you all posted. Oh, for us in Japan, it's on Mondays at 9:00 on the Fuji network. There are a few others that I have hopes for, but no particular reason to expect anything. The best maybe is a hospital show with a beautiful, 30-year old female doctor named Tamaki. (Oh, how close to the Japanese word for cigar, "hamaki"!) If G.I. Joe or anyone else here in Japan catches any smoking scenes in the dramas, please post here. Share the wealth!
...start of another drama season in Japan. I gave up on the spring dramas fairly quickly. But one, called "R-17" ( not available in my area) had a main female character who smoked if the pictures in the weekly TV Guide were a good indication. I swear almost every week the little picture in the magazine for that show showed her holding an all-white cigarette! Talk about frustrating. Well, hope it comes out on video like most recent dramas have been.
