We were transiting back to Pearl Harbour after completing training ops between Maui and Molokai. We had just surfaced and were preparing to dump weighted trash and garbage when the Captain himself spotted debris on the surface. We approached to investigate and then saw survivors. They had been in the water a number of hours. We picked them up and returned them to Pearl. As I recall, there were only 5 survivors clinging to the debris. Two others tried to swim to shore, but didn't make it. Several of the survivors were Honolulu Police Officers.
