Posted by Frank Prior Greetings on behalf of the '79 ~ '83 crew from Bagram Air Field in beautiful downtown Kablamistan. Beyond all reason, I recently took a job with KBR/Halliburton as a Generator Mechanic making sure all the ground pounders have enough electricity to light their tents at night. It's quite beautiful here with snow covered peaks surrounding the base, and also bone-chilling cold. It snowed and/or rained every day for the first week I was here but it's also very dry and dusty. It's the only place I know where you can stand ankle deep in muddy slush and still have to wipe dust from your eyes. The assignment takes a service team to various Forward Operating Posts along the Pakistani border to repair and maintain diesel-electric generators for the Army/Marine Special Forces camps. We fly in and out by helicopter, but they don't trust us with guns yet so we have to rely on armed escorts and body armor for protection. Living quarters here are Spartan at best, but still better than the Stern Room. 8-man wooden barracks with heat and A/C, showers with plenty of hot water and a chow hall that serves typical military swill. Now this is living. Since A'stan is an Islamic country, there is NO BEER to be had anywhere. All they serve is some nasty-tasting locally brewed non-alcaholic malt beverage substitute. But if I close my eyes and pretend a lot, it still kinda sucks. Well, shipmates, I hope I'm up to the task and will make every effort to bring a good name the 584 crew.
