Why no west coast catboat builders? Are condition not suited?

From my point of view, outside the US, it looks to me that the catboat is a east coast tradition that began with work boats in the Cape Cod region. I think a catboat can sail everywhere.

Yep, good question. In my search as a very novice sailor for a craft suitable for hereabouts, I have looked at that design and wondered why not? From looking at Cragslist sailboat ads until my eyes can't focus, I offer two hypotheses: 1) too slow, clunky and uncool looking for west coast sailing market despite their inherent advantages (for comparison see Cal, San Juan, Catalina et al. designs over the last three decades); 2) knowledge diffusion, aka "it ain't invented here" syndrome. Thats the social side. Any thoughts from the tech side? Best, Ole

Good question and I am interested also. From what I read they sound roomy, easy to sail and just what would work great here on the lower Columbia River and probably lots of other places.

I think my vote would go with Michel's explanation. Are there not any Com-Pac dealers on the West Coast, or are you wantin' wooden?
