New to sailing and considering 17' Jersey or Seabright style skiff, 5' beam, sprit rigged, gunnel to bottem depth about 20", from Dinghy Company, Mt. Vernon, WA. Boat can be rowed, sailed or motored. Main sailing area Columbia River near Carson, WA, area known for windsurfing. I don't anticipate intentionally being out in those conditions, but want something that can be handled safely to shore if the wind does come up. Advice from anyone with any epxerience in that type of boat welcome. Thx in advance. Full sails, Ole Helgerson, Carson, WA

Ole have you looked at the Gig Harbour boats? ghboats.com I think they have some for you to sail to see what you like. I know my Montgomery 10 is a little small for me 6" 240lb Bill

Bill, Thanks for the note. I have looked at GH boats on line and they do look nice. Dinghy Co. offerings are more affordable and seem to be about the same dimensions. Presume both good on build quality. Sprit vs. Bermuda is something that I have pondered and researched much. Conclude that sprit should work ok, though reefing is an issue. Solution; see Slider sprit rigged catamaran in FL. The DC 17' sailing rig also carries a 4' steel centerboard. Else used Potter or Montgomery, though the latter are scarce. Best, Ole

I also have a Montgomery 15 very stable easy to rig comfortable for 2 need trailer to launch need outboard to get around. Hard to find used only 2 Montgomery boats for sale in Phoenix in over a year. I missed a chance at an M17 sold to a person in CA last spring. Good luck in making the right decision. Bill

One of the most comfortable small sailboats I have sailed in with another good sized guy in shifty winds was a Capri 14-2 on Tempe town lake. I didn't buy it at the time because I didn't have any place to store it and he was asking over book for it. It had a motor mount no rowing though. Try before you buy if you can. Bill

Bill, Thx. Took sailing lessons this winter and spring in what seems a similar rig, Lido 14. They have their advantages. Good advice on try before you buy. Still looking for anyone with knowledge of Dinghy Co 17 South Jersey skiff. Best, Ole
