Thanks for all the helpful responses. Just came across this information on how one large centerboard vessel, the Ventura, handled the problem of marine growth in its centerboard case: "sail to the Old Mr Boston distillery nearby, fill the box from a large barrel of rot gut gin, and shake, via the motion of the ocean. The process took a while . . . with the crew dutifully involved with the mixology."
