I was looking at a Com-pac dealer website today and noticed that the Compac 23 has 8 stays in all..looking closer I noticed that there is in fact an extra set of lower shrouds that travel down at an almost diagonal angle from their tangs at mid-mast to the chainplates somewhere mid-cockpit I'd say. I am wondering if there are any folks who have one of these or have sailed on one with this arrangement and if so...what are the pro's and cons? The mast will be more stable and allow better sail shape in some cases but could excess stability yield drawbacks as well ..I also wonder if they "get in the way" sometimes...afterall...a small sailboat already has a lot of standing rigging that must be skirted around frequently....I'm curious because my 1983 Hunter 20 has a very long mast (29'+) and seems almost flimsy at times because it's not particularly thick. I have toyed with the possibilty of adding some kind of additional stays...Thanks, Morgan in Sarasota
