Since, along with the developement of the engine, there have been major improvements in the weatherlyness and structural integrity of small boats like we sail. I think that it would be a pretty unusual situation that you could not get out of under sail, dingy, or anchor. Good ground tackle with lots of rode might be as important as the engine. Also very rarely used engines are not very reliable especially on short notice. I would venture to say that an engine that hung on the boat with the tape for six months would be a less than even bet to start. Dave
