Among other reasons, the fact that there are far fewer shipwrecks in the 20th century vs the 18th century was due to the advent of the infernal combustion engine. There are places you can't go or situations that you can't get out of without an engine. View it as insurance. I like the idea of putting a piece of tape on the outboard saying "Do Not Use" and seeing if you have it still there in 6 months..
