My sailing is not in your league - mostly I sail in the protected waters of SF Bay and the Puget Sound. Nevertheless, I have always sailed without a motor, having never liked the smell, sound and hassle of an auxiliary. On the other hand, many marinas prohibit navigation under sail within their jurisdiction. Therefore, I would expect that an auxiliary is a necessity in many of the ports you will visit.
