Being able to put the boat right where you want it to go by sail only is very rewarding. Takes time though, something most of us don't have. Planning when to avoid or take advantage of tides and currents, being able to wait out no wind conditions or high wind conditions can eat up the hours. So if you have the time why not leave the iron wind off the boat, certainly eliminates a lot of possible problems and expense.
For me I will keep the auxillary, although I would love to have an electric instead of fossil fuel burner, the added safety of being able to pull away from potential problems or whizz out of traffic in a busy harbor is very comnforting.
Don't pass up a visit to the Channel Islands and Catalina Island on your way south.
