After reading more, sounds more like you are talking about a light sun shade/rain canopy than a full scale boom tent. When I hear boom tent I think: zipping windows, screens, fully enclosed cockpit - bug free - sleep out in it, etc., but then that may just be me.
A couple of short PVC poles under the boom for a resting sun shade, probably just fine...
