Hello,
I don't usually get enough time to chat with anyone, but today is an exception. My answer is that safety is more a matter of how the boat is designed and who is piloting. There have been past accidents involving both large and small boats. One great example of large is the Titanic. An example of small is Happy, a 14 foot boat designed and built by Jay Benford for Howard Wayne Smith. It sailed 10,000 miles before being holed on a reef in the Pacific. The best person to answer is Sven Yrvind, who in the Jan/Feb 08 issue of Small Craft advisor, states his theories on small boats.
Most likely, it is who is piloting, and when and where the boat is voyaging;lastly how the boat is designed. The Pardeys voyaged for a while in a 24 foot boat. They moved up to 29 feet for more comfort. The Bolducs traverse from Florida to the Bahamas in a 15 foot boat designed by Matt Layden. There are even smaller boats that have crossed the Pacific. But, most people would rather cruise on a ship. It's just more comfortable. Webb Chiles used an open boat to cruise in open water. It's more about whether you are willing and skilled and somewhat lucky when you add up all the stories.
