I don't know what I can add to the discussion, except to confirm all the positive comments. My wife and I have cruised in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia and the San Juan Islands in Washington State for many years, first in a Wayfarer and then in a Sea Pearl. Reefing is easy and safe with the Sea Pearl and the boat sails well when reefed. You would have to be very inattentive to capsize. I have occasionally taken water over the gunwale in a gust but quickly releasing the main sheet instantly rights the boat.
Our boat, #208, 1987, has ballast tanks and flotation tanks built into the bow and stern.
She is very fast running or reaching -- beating into the wind she can't compete with a sloop. See pictures and articles about our regattas at http://members.shaw.ca/jscull/regatta.htm
We found sleeping on the Sea Pearl to be challenging, so we always spend the night on shore.
