It's obvious that lug or junk rigged boats with relatively short, unstayed masts can realistically be trailered into larger sizes and weights than the more conventional high aspect sail, tall masted sloop with half a mile of steel cables hanging off the masthead. I've pulled a 5000 lb trailer load all over the midwest with a 300 cu. in. Ford and a 318 Dodge, so it's not really all that much about huge motors. I'm pretty comfortable up to about 25 feet and 3000 - 3500 lbs dry boat weight, plus trailer. And as ol' Bill says, this is web chat. your mileage may vary. Don't bet your life on my opinions. Jeff
A vehicle's trailering ability goes up considerably if you drive a 4WD pickup with low four easily accessible (i.e. automatic hubs and easy lever or pushbutton control). A granny low four speed transmission helps too. And not being in a big hurry on the road. And a long wheel base. But with a low-four you can pull a lot of boat up a steep ramp without burning up tires, clutches, or your nerves.
