Posted by Ol Bill on 10/15/2007, 9:24:52, in reply to "ideal trailering size" Unrelatedly, a general rule of thumb for a trailerable boat in my mind (speaking for myself only) is about 15 to 23 feet of boat for cruising (if planning on trailering/launching/retriving etc). But be aware some vehicles can't safely even handle say a Catalina 22. Much bigger and the boat becomes "movable" on a trailer (maybe) but not truely "get up and just go anywhere trailerable" . With all likelyhood a boat bigger than a 22 or 23 ftr will almost cetrtainly end up at a slip one day. Even the 22 or 23 may also end up that way. 17 to 21 may be a more realistic length for a truely trailerable boat. Some 20 ft boats aren't really very tralerable (Flicka). So in addition to other factors consider the length, weight, and vehicle tow capacity in with the mix. The above is NOT advice, it is only informal web chat; completely at your own sole risk. Ol Bill
One important thing additionally to consider is the capacity of your tow vehicle, and you have to allow for a huge pile of sailing equipment weight in addition to the combined boat and trailer weight.
