Posted by Howard Rice on 8/20/2007, 15:19:29 Anyone else out there have any experience with this classic sailing dinghy? I am an avid canoe sailor (sailed one around Cape Horn a few years ago), Newick trimaran owner, avid dinghy cruiser and sail boat racer who has been smitten by a 10'10" dinghy, go figure. Its her lines, they grabbed me and I can't seem to shake the notion that the Robin is one of the best if not the best of the sub 12 foot dinghies (one of my criteria for a solo cruising dinghy). In my mind she is among the best of the 12 and under size sailing dinghies. Does anyone out there have any experience with the Robin? If interested I can post photos and specs.
Hello All.
A few years ago I discovered a classic 10'10" sailing dinghy by Philip Rhodes (Robin design #11). Over the last three years I have set about finding Robins and have managed to collect five. Three are glass hulls with wood decks and two are light as a feather all wood cold molded hulls with wood decks.
I have been dinghy cruising in one of the boats and what a wonderful, fast (for its size) stable and well behaved boat. I am now redesigning the cockpit for cruising. I have her rigged with a sleep aboard tent. They are also a pleasure to look at as most Rhodes designs are. The boat is interesting in that it attracts sailors whenever I sail. Inevitably folks will wander over and ask "what kind of boat is this?", "what a beauty", "where can I get one".
My research shows that about 400 plus were built and the last of the genre came out of the manufacturer in the mid sixties.
Best, Howard
