Posted by joshua Colvin on 5/30/2007, 12:08:07 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NORTH MYRTLE BEACH MAN TO SET SAIL FOR BERMUDA IN 19' BOAT North Myrtle Beach, SC---Dayton Altman of Cherry Grove Beach sets sail for Bermuda in a 19' Cape Dory Typhoon this week. He will depart from the end of Main Street/Sea Mountain Highway in Cherry Grove Beach at 12:00 noon on Friday, June 1st. Altman anticipates the voyage to Bermuda and back will take approximately three weeks. Altman's story will be featured in the national publication, Small Craft Advisor and will include pictures of the voyage. Altman has lived in and around the water his entire life, owning a boat since he was 10 years old. Altman has worked in all areas of the marine industry to gain knowledge and prepare him for this voyage. He has studied legendary small boat sailors; such as Robert Manry, Gerry Spiess and Altman's mentor, Hugo S. Vihlen. Vihlen holds the world record for crossing the North Atlantic in the smallest boat from West to East in a 5'4" custom designed boat named Father's Day, set in 1993. The story is recounted in his astonishing book, The Stormy Voyage of FATHER'S DAY. Vihlen, a retired Delta airline pilot has held a world record since 1968 when Vihlen crossed the North Atlantic from Casablanca to Miami in a 5'11" boat named April Fool. Vihlen consulted with Altman regarding the Bermuda voyage and visited Altman last year to survey the boat. Altman has refitted the boat, Typhoon to withstand certain conditions, such as cockpit flooding by adding larger cockpit drains and watertight companionway boards. Altman states, "I have always envisioned myself undertaking this voyage. I look forward to the challenge and experience the voyage will bring. I have planned and prepared for this day for many years. The boat is equipped with safety gear and equipment including an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). I have a Iridium Satellite phone so that I can communicate with my family giving daily GPS position reports". The public and media is invited to view Altman's departure at 12:00 noon, Friday, June 1st as he will be anchored just off the breakers at Oceanfront and the Main Street area of Sea Mountain Highway in the Cherry Grove Beach section of North Myrtle Beach, SC.
