Time to have to some more activity on this board again!
The recipe is the old, wellknown one, and I have a suspicion that this may be far too easy – but we’ll see...
The question, then, as usual, is: who are we, and what do we have in common?
1: I was already seriously ill when I came to the throne, and my reign was very short. Who knows – if I hadn’t been such a heavy smoker, maybe the course of world history would have been quite different?
2: I was only a child when I came to the throne. I took the initiative to form an alliance between my own kingdom and the neighbouring ones, but it would take another two and a half centuries before they were finally united. When my son and heir died after a short reign, his heir was his sister, but she renounced the throne in favour of her son (my grandson).
3: I was the younger brother of a king. I was the ancestor of a separate branch of our family, and today my descendants and those of my brother are disputing the headship of our dynasty. I was married twice, but I preferred men. Rumour has it that my wife and I even had the same lover...
4: I was not exactly what you would call the worthiest of monarchs: I was a drunken hooligan who went around town with my mates, wrecking property and beating up whores...
5: I sat on several thrones, but the place where I grew up and spent most of my life is perhaps the smallest and least famous of my kingdoms. I was known in my time for my considerable linguistic skills and my patronage of poetry, science and the arts. After my son and successor died, the throne of my biggest kingdom was vacant for a long time.
6: I was quite contented with my life as a naval officer, but when I was offered a foreign throne I accepted. After my wife’s death, I had to spend five years in her native country.
7: My brief reign in a foreign country lasted only one winter, and I ended up losing the high rank I had inherited from my father. Later on, though, long after I was dead, my son regained it.
8: I was the last ruler of my dynasty. During my reign, I was frequently in conflict with the pope, though not nearly as deeply as my famous father.
9: I became a king only a few years after receiving another dignity (which now, suddenly, was no longer relevant). I was known for my great size – according to one source, I was 2.11 m (or 6' 11" to our non-metric friends... ![]()
)
10: You might say I had it all, but then I lost it through my own obstinacy: as a small boy I acceded to one throne, and as a teenager I acceded to two more. But when I got fed up with the complaints and insubordination of my subjects, I went "on strike" in a remote part of my realm. After repeatedly having refused to reply to letters from my councils, I was deposed from my three thrones one by one. Later on I made a living organising what amounted to piracy for a while, before I stopped sulking and returned to my native land...
