I definitely know the feeling here. As a kid in the 70's, I thought Bobby Hebb, Preston Epps and Phil Phillips were white. Among those whom I thought were black were Bobbie Gentry, Jackie DeShannon.
I found out that The O'Kaysions was a white group by a very rare picture sleeve of "Girl Watcher" on the group's local hometown North State label (before the song was nationally distributed on ABC and became a big hit) confirmed this; I don't have the sleeve itself, but it's shown in one of my record price guides. Even the caption below the sleeve says: "I wonder how many people out there, after seeing this rare picture of the group for probably the first time, thought the group was black."
I also thought the Stylistics and Blue Magic were female groups. Isn't it strange how the ears and eyes differ in perception at times?
