Jimmy Carl Black, the original drummer for Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention, died Saturday, November 1 in Germany, after a bout with cancer. Black played with Zappa from 1964 until 1969, when Zappa decided to break up the original MOI.
In spite of the breakup, Black made a few more appearances with Zappa, most notably in the movie, "200 Motels". His last appearance with came around 1982, during the recording of the "You Are What You Is" album.
Originally from El Paso, TX, Black moved to Europe in the mid-1990's, first to Italy, then Germany. I had the privilege of meeting him, just after I graduated from high school, while visiting my aunt in El Paso. He was a very cool guy, who always loved playing music. I always seem to remember him grinning ear to ear, while I was visiting with him. That's one day I'll never forget Very cool guy, who will be missed. RIP Jimmy C!
