Primal rock and R&B musician Bo Diddley, one of the early pioneers of rock & roll whose pulsing signature syncopated rhythm that became his trademark known as "The Bo Diddley Beat", died yesterday of heart failure after several years of hypertension and other health problems. He was 79.
As a charter member of Chicago's legendary Chess label, his hits included: "Bo Diddley", "Mona", "Who Do You Love", "I'm A Man", "Road Runner" and "Say Man". He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987 as part of just the second class of inductees at that time.
On a personal note, Mr. Diddley was a main staple here in Pittsburgh for five decades. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform here about six years ago. After the show, I met him in his dressing room backstage. He wasn't too talkative, but he was happy to sign one of my R&R documentary books that included his photo.
He will be missed, but that B.D. Beat will live forever!
