One song I always liked but never hear mentioned is Guitar Man, released in early 1968. Up until then I was frankly bored with Elvis because all he was doing for several years was slushy, Perry Como-ish ballads. I asked Mom why Elvis couldn't do some hard rock once in a while and she said probably because he was "getting old" (he had just passed age 30 around this time--good thing Mick Jagger wasn't eavesdropping when Mom made that comment). But a lot of listeners must have been asking the same thing (I believe John Lennon did--directly) and so Guitar Man hit the charts. And one thing I loved about the song was the reference he made in the song to Mobile, Alabama, my Mom's birthplace! -Roy
