MS. MARVEL #45
~ War of Marvels: Part 4 ~
writer. Brian Reed
artist. Philippe Briones
Synopsis: Ms. Marvel [Dr. Karla Sofen] delivers what should be a fatal blow to the helplessly mortal Catherin Donovan; only to have Catherine manage to avoid her; using lighting reflexes a human doesn't possess. As Karla tries to take Catherine down; she is confronted by the other Ms. Marvel; who takes the fight out in the open skies of New York City. Meanwhile an injured Catherine is confronted by a dozen armed guards, all with permission to execute her. From within herself, Catherine finds the skill and reflexes of a superhero; taking down all the guards (while the Storyteller's reveal through telepathy that they tried to give Carol her wish; a life free of the duty and burden of being Ms. Marvel and Carol Danvers). Outside Karla tries to buy Osborn and his guards time to kill Catherine; so to keep the other Ms. Marvel occupied; she hurls innocent workers into the sky; knowing the other Ms. Marvel will be duty-bound to save them, over saving "herself" (i.e. Catherine). In the Avengers' tower, Catherine is on the run; only to be confronted by Osborn; who shoots her in the face, killing her. But this earns the rage of the Storytellers; who worked hard to give Catherine a life free of Carol Danvers. They use their powers to dissolve Catherine's body into shiny cubes; and flee the Avengers tower.
~ cliffhanger: with no other choice; the Storytellers plant the shiny cubes into Karla; forcing the dominant Catherine personality to take her over [grade: A+] WOW! DID NOT SEE THAT COMING! Awesome!
LOVED
1. that the art is once again free of Sana's anime/manga rubbish! I'm not even a huge fan of the art this issue (by Briones); but I would HAPPILY choose this over anime/manga junk any day of the week.
2. that this wasn't just another 32-page fight issue.
3. that Osborn actually killed Catherine. An excellent twist! And very Terminator-esq.
LIKED
1. Catherine's "thought" dialogue. Very well written; with the right amount of fear and sass to keep it interesting; and non-woe is me!
2. Karla: Congratulations. Citizens. You just joined the Avengers... for a minute anyway. You can tell the fat Ms. Marvel there is not running away from this fight.
3. Karla: Yay! Fat Ms. Marvel did it. Let's try again. I bet I can drop them faster than you can catch them!
4. that a gun built by Osborn can't fire at him. That is a VERY sensible fail safe. But, why then break the tip? I suppose I could argue, that while she can't shoot "at him"; she could possibly shoot something else to cause him problems, so best to destroy the gun and not risk it.
OVERALL
An excellent, excellent issue. A great blend of action and story; with two wonderful twists; that had me eager for more. I know some people don't like this story; but I've really liked this Storyteller's arc; it's certainly creative and interesting. It's a shame this is the wind down of Karla's time in the comic (*sniff*). I'm not sure I'll continue to pick up the book (maybe for the Mystique issue). I really HATE Sana Takeda's art. It's just not Marvel; and I think art is a very important part of a comic. Bad art ruins good storytelling (Young Avengers/Runaways Secret Invasion mini). And from the two later synopsizes??? (synopsi?) it doesn't seem like Karla will be in the book after this. Pity. I would have loved a grudging alliance between the two. That would have been a great story. Oh well... I might stick around; or at-least follow the comic enough to see if Karla reappears down the line. Who knows?
