MS. MARVEL #44
~ War of Marvels: Part III ~
writer. Brian Reed
artist. Sana Takeda... BOO!!!
Synopsis: Ms. Marvel [Karla] and Iron Patriot [Osborn] hover over the body of Captain Marvel [Danvers]; who was taken out by a pumpkin bomb from Lily. Osborn is pleased with this success; but Karla is less than satisfied; pointing out this is not the warrior she fort in L.A. Meanwhile, Catherine Donovan arrives in New York; and walks right into the Avengers building (where they have Captain Marvel hostage); only to be set-upon by guards; then pursued through the streets by the Avengers. When both are put in the same building, Karla notices that Captain Marvel gets more and more powerful the closer she is to Catherine Donovan; but the observation comes too late, and Captain Marvel breaks free of her restraints. Osborn goes to take her down; as Karla comments you need to kill Catherine Donovan to stop Captain Marvel.
~ cliffhanger: Karla hovering over the bed of Catherine Donovan, ready to kill her. My problem is Karla could just shoot her in the head, so unless Captain Marvel appears within the next second, there is no reason Karla should "fail" in her mission... and we know she will, since obviously combining the two people will bring back Carol. Oh well. [grade: B-]
~ cover: a nice pose of Karla holding a chained Carol over her head, and it's great to see the covers have FINALLY caught up to date... shame it's anime crap again. \:\( [grade: B]
LOVED
1. Karla's sensible reasoning that it wasn't the real Ms. Marvel; and her working out in the end, how to stop Carol. Again, it's so good to see Karla back to being the big brain that she is.
2. Karla: Norman, I think you're about to lose some soldiers.
LIKED
1. Ms. Marvel: You just leave bombs laying around the house?
2. Catherine again referring to her alcoholism. It's great to see Reed not shying away from tackling the continued consequences of alcoholism.
3. Daken: Yeah and I'm the Red Hulk.
4. Osborn actually raising his "fire" hand to Karla, when she doesn't let Danvers go. It was very interesting.
DISLIKED
1. the return of the anime queen. God, last issue's art was SO GOOD, why are we back to this crap?
2. Osborn AGAIN calling Spiderman [Gargan] Venom... AND in public. He's not stupid, he knows better. Boo!
OVERALL
A good issue, let down by really off-putting art. I really, really hate this shit anime-crap. Sentry looks like the creepy painting from Ghostbusters II (1989). Daken looked like he had a shark's face. It's shit! God I hope they fire this artist, it's really ruining my enjoyment of this comic. I would say "I'd drop the comic" (I dropped X-Factor and the Runaways/Young Avengers Secret Invasion because of awful art), but since it's Karla's book... I could never drop it... not even if we got stick figures. ;\) Other than that it was another interesting installment of the "War of Marvel" not as good as issue 2, but far better than the "fight-a-holic" issue 1. I really am liking Reed' Karla.
