Just because one doesn't see it and there are laws against discriminatory practices does NOT mean that it does not occur. Just because Barack Obama is the first black President of the United States does NOT mean that racism is over. Just because Margaret Thatcher became the first Prime Minister of Great Britain did not mean that sexism was done and gone. Just because there are openly gay actors/businessmen/woman, et al, does not mean that gay people are accepted with no hesitation at all. Take a look at some of the board comments at other spots around the web, you'll see some vitriol being spewed anonymously that is indicative of the stupidity that still runs rampant. Better yet, read one's local newspaper's letters to the editors and you will see some local ignorance.
It is dangerously to naive to think that the struggles for equality have ended. Obviously, there are those who wish to see those rolled back to suit whatever extremist agenda or mindset that they follow. All is NOT peachy keen. While woman have made enormous strides, obviously there is still a mindset that sees them as mothers only and not fit for much else. I work with grown men who act like a bunch of 12 year old boys when it comes to their attitude to woman.
Unfortunately, I have far too many more examples to give that illustrate my point, and we run the risk of having this thread derail. As moderator, I am going to keep a close eye on this and if starts to derail and we stop talking about Ms. Marvel, I will close it.
