Women in comics have a long and varied history, as does the history of women's rights in the Western world. In the Golden Age, obviously there was Wonder Woman and a slew of other Golden Age ladies who were strong and dashing and sexy. But then a lot of female characters were relegated to hang ons for the male characters, that and nothing more. Modern audiences may wince when they read Silver Age FANTASTIC FOUR issues and see Sue Storm swoon like a Victorian lady out of an issue of PUNCH, but even then female characters were starting to break free of the damsel in distress trope.
Yes, no one's going to doubt that the feminism of Marvel in the 70's was in your face and preachy(Lady Liberators and male chauvinist pigs up against the wall, anyone?). I believe even Jim Shooter agreed that Ms. Marvel was a propaganda character that was created for an agenda and nothing more..until Claremont fleshed her out into a multi-faceted and complex character that we have today.
That's where we are now, a multi faceted(actually two) female characters that are complex and unique. One represents light and one represents darkness.
