I was born in 1976 so I was a bit young when Ms. Marvel first premiered. However, I do remember the flavor the 70's very well, which persisted for a few years into the early 80's. This was reflected in the culture and pop culture, including toys, fashions, music, books and so forth. Remember that a decade is NOT defined on the first day of the year, but a few years in. Avengers Annual #10 could have come out in '78 instead of '81 very easily.
The name Ms. Marvel is very 70's, yes, and I like the 70's. But I was never a fan of the name Warbird, and with the alternate Carol Danvers as a blood soaked murderer, it's damaged goods, and that look was too 90's, not a good decade when it came to comics. Stick with the name, not the old belly baring costume and Farrah hair era of Ms. Marvel.
