I have indeed read Ryan's websites on Ms. Marvel's alcoholism and the review of the issues at hand, and unfortunately I still arrive at that conclusion. I find it hollow because the events at hand were decades prior, in the 1980's. I do understand that time flows slowly in a comic, but to "reintroduce" Warbird/Ms. Marvel with an alcoholism plot based on events that happened during the last decade of the Cold War was ill conceived.
And another thing? Avengers #200 has to be the WORST comic I have ever had the misfortune to read. Carol Danvers seduced by her son/lover/rapist is heave inducing, and how that ever saw the light of day is well beyond me. Well to Claremont to patch up the issue as best as he could in AVENGERS ANNUAL #10. One may complain that he depowered Carol with his introduction of Rogue in the Annual, but that was worlds apart from the travesty that is Avengers #200.
I think mine biggest problem in the alcoholism story is not the path that she was set on, because I would probably become an alcoholic if said events had happened to me. Indeed, I have had personal and up front experiences with the abuses of alcohol, so I am not unsympathetic whatsoever. I lost a good friend two years ago to a drunk driver, and alcohol wrecked havoc with my family for years growing up.
My problems were that the events in question were years prior and one of them is something that should not have been printed, in my opinion, at least. I am well and all for heroes going through the wringer, male and female, that is indeed the essence of being a hero. Like one said, Ms. Marvel survived and came out on top. But not with an alcoholism angle associated with events that happened years prior and were barely mentioned.
