How does a dog know that it is either past clinic hours or the weekend? They must, that's the only time they get sick!!
Came home later from work today than normal. Notice Aspen has pooped in his kennel. Looks like he cleaned it up himself or it wasn't much. Huh. Okay well must have gotten into something. So I let all the dogs out of their kennels and Aspen makes a beeline for the water bowl. Tries to inhale three gallons of water. Get him outside, let them do what the do. He comes back to the door and his butt fluffies are bloody. CRAP. He then comes in and throws up approximately three gallons of water. OOOOOOOOFFFFF course. *sigh* Lock him in the bathroom, clean up the water/hurkings, throw him in the tub and give him a quick rinse. Clean out his crate while he dries, give him a fresh bed.
Put dog in crate, call vet. Evidence of EXTREMELY small town life smacks me in the face.
"Hello thank you for calling XXXX Animal Hospital. Our hours are from 8-5. We will open tomorrow at 8 am." Le sigh. No answering service. Now. I used to work for this vet. Her house is half a mile up the street. I COULD go bang on her door. But I have a feeling it will result in less than satisfactory veterinary service.
Back up plan. Friend who just graduated vet school. Call her up, run through everything. Not painful, generally alert other than DYING of thirst. Good gum color, hasn't asked to go out since initial visit. Keeping down small amounts of water. (apparently three gallons doesn't constitute small. who knew?!
) Verdict? Don't panic, keep an eye on him. Small amounts of water, NPO for 24 hrs. If something changes go to reg vet asap. He's acting fine and I figured he'd gotten into something icky or caught a bug. It's just nice to hear it from a professional.
Anyone up for giving a stinky, clock reading, aussie a bath tomorrow?!
