Unfortunately one thing that is left untold is the problem with actually handling or editing 4k video footage. You need a powerful computer to reliably process the stuff since there’s 5x more pixels for your computer to manage than your regular 720p or 1080p video! The files are so huge and the pixel density is so compressed that you need a heavy pc with a beefy video card to actually edit it without pulling your hair out. You simply can’t scan the files efficiently if you’re running an older computer.
As a comparison, I convert a 4K Video which was 688MB into a 720p video that is only 88MB. Big difference for your computer. I have a 3 year old MacBook Air and 4k movies in iMovie are impossible for it to process.
Now, you’re probably wondering, why the hell should I shoot in 4k, especially if i’m just shooting for hobby? Well, recently GoPro upgraded the hero4 and hero3+ software to allow time lapse videos which are just beautiful. Unfortunately the only way to use this mode is in 4k. So how the hell do we handle it?
So you got that sweet time lapse you took but your PC is not beefy enough to handle it. The solution? Lee have to down convert you 4k Video into something manageable like 1080p or 720p.
Here is an easy way to convert your 4k video to more manageable format like MP4, MKV, AVI, Apple ProRes etc for editing with NLEs including Windows/Mac editing softwares or playing on devices etc with the Pavtube Video Converter for Mac (Windows).
