He had developed a cough over the last month, which the vet and I both thought was kennel cough. His condition rapidly went downhill that last weekend and on Tuesday, we took him to the emergency vet. After draining 2 Liters of bloody fluid out of his chest, the vet was able to get a clearer picture on the x-ray. Although his lungs were clear, he did have a tumor about the size of a grapefruit pressing on his airway (hence the coughing) and it was bleeding out. At that point, he was not in any pain, just having a hard time breathing, and was worn down from not eating well over the last week. Rather than put him through a risky surgery and complicated recovery, the only loving choice at that point was to help him over the Bridge. I held him as he crossed over and told him what a brave boy he was.
We all miss Finn terribly. Our pack of three is now just two and while we're finding our way without him, it is vastly different without Finn and his big hearted sweetness. Ollie and Lilly are a little lost without him -- while he was definitely not our alpha dog, he was the happy spirit that brought out the playfulness in the other two.
