Lilly's mother bloated with nothing in her stomach after coming home from a dog show. Finn had eaten the cat food in the morning after we left for work and we didn't get him to the vet until about 5:00 that evening. We had a rescue girl bloat twice (she passed away after the second bloat episode; she was 13) over the course of 2 weeks. Bloat doesn't follow any timelines.
I'd say that if you have concerns, talk to your vet about what options you have for at-home and in the clinic in the event of a pre-bloat/bloat episode.
P.S. Finn is my disaster-dog, too. If something goes wrong, it happens to him.
