Yesterday while hiking he and another dog we were with took off after a scent like they always do. I recalled them, the husky came back but Kingston stayed in the brush. A few seconds later we heard him fighting something, immediately we rushed into the woods and retrieved our dog.
He was very wound up, hackles up, sprinting back and fourth along the forest's edge. Later we discovered that he was bleeding from his tail and hind legs. He also stayed very close the rest of the hike.
That evening while walking a different wooded path, where coyotes are prevalent, he was very unhappy. Hackles all the way up, tail between legs, whining and smelling air then quickly coming right back to my side. Today he refused to enter woods with my wife.
My very long winded question is. Have any of you had run ins with coyotes? And what is the best way to make him feel comfortable in the woods again, short of taking the .22 with us.
