My name is Andrew and I got a Rhodesian pup which I'm picking up this weekend (2/9/10)! I've been doing a lot of research but I still have a few questions that I thought I'd direct to other Rhodesian owners.
1) I am a runner which is what attracted me to the breed. At what age can I really start running with my Rhodesian (I do not want to jepordize the puppy's healthy growth in any way).
2) While I really want to run with the pup to exercise him, I also was wondering if there were any activities that you could with your Rhodesian which would make the dog happy? Because I do not think that I worded my question as clearly as possible I'll use some examples to illustrate what I am trying to say.
a) Labor Retrievers love to retrieve things. Owners will teach their dog to fetch a ball and in that way let the dog tap into its natural instinct resulting in a happier pup.
b) collies are hearding dogs. I know owners who take their dog out and let it heard things and it makes the dog really happy.
Back to the Rhodesians, what sort of things (other than running) would a Rhodesian love to do (or is running pretty much what the dog loves to do)?
I was thinking that the dog was a tracking dog and might enjoy some sort of tracking activities, however I do know the first thing about training a dog to track, nor do I know how I could set up tracking games so that the dog could just go off and have some fun for a little bit. If anyone has any comments or suggestions regarding Rhodesian activities please let me know.
3) I've owned both labs and basset hounds. I know what it is like to have a smart dog that wants to please its owner and I know what its like to have a stubborn dog that does not want to listen. I understand Rhodesians are strong minded, independent dogs. I am open to any and all suggestions from people regarding training and owning Rhodesians.
