I've seen our guy clear 7 feet but up onto something - like up a rock face onto a hill. But that was only to get to us, not to chase a deer. He gets excited when he sees a deer but will not jump the 5-6 foot split rail fence we have. Probably depends on the prey drive of the individual though, so you're probably best to have the extra height to be sure.
