Jeff,
I don't know if the shelter has policies against it, but all of my foster dogs' new homes are given a packet with my phone numbers, e-mail and contact information. Just as a breeder would, they are all told that if ANYTHING happens, they are free to call me 24-7...if they have any problems, questions, or issues, I am on call for them at all times. I have kept in touch with all of my fosters and I even have 1 that comes back for boarding as she does not do well in a kennel situation, and I give all the adoption homes that option (all my dogs have gone within 2-3 hours' drive from me). I figure that they are already socialized with my dogs, so it's not a huge adjustment for them.
And? I LOVE the fact that I get pictures during special occasions and outings from the new adoptive homes. It always brings that good feeling back. Also, I always tell our rescue coordinator that if at any time one of the dogs I've fostered comes back into rescue, that I will take the dog back...so far so good, none returned
