We were at a cottage this weekend about 2 hours away from the nearest emergency vet when our RR had a severe allergic reaction to something (we assume an insect bite). She has had significant reactions in the past but this was the worst I've seen. She could barely open her eyes, inside her ears was purple, and there was no area of her body not swollen, not to mention she was clearly agitated and extremely itchy to the point of almost panic herself. I had brought Benadryl and Prednisone in case of a reaction but this took far longer than usual to kick in and I had to essentially double the dose before anything started to relieve the symptoms. It likely was something new she hadn't encountered as I know the first reaction is normally the worst. It did occur to me that perhaps we should have an epi-pen to carry with us in case she encounters something that takes her into anaphylactic proportions particularly in a setting like that where we would need to buy time to get her to a vet. Does anyone else do this? I know there have been many posts on hives before so thought perhaps someone may have experience with this. Thanks, Erin & Malaika
