If the welts/swelling is really bad, a vet can give a shot of antihistimine and/or steroid. We had to do that for Finn when he thought he could eat a bee -- we were afraid his throat would swell shut or not be able to breathe because the reaction came on really quickly and Finn has terrible luck to start with!
But...if these are just an allergic reaction to grass or something environmental, you can give him an antihistimine at home -- just be sure to watch him carefully and keep dosing him regularly for a few days so that his body has time to process the allergen out. 1-2 mg. Benedryl (regular pink pack -- generics available in diphenhydramine HCL) per pound of body weight. Two, 25 mg. tablets would be a good starting place.
A rinse in cool water would also make him feel better.
