My Jaycee got a bad case of them when she was a puppy. They got infected and she ended up having to go on antibiotics for about 3 weeks as well as I washed her face with PhisoHex until they were gone. She also broke out during her first two heat cycles. None of my other dogs got them.
I have always fed from stainless steel but I got into the habit of washing their food bowls after every meal to cut down on any bacteria. I also supplemented her meals for awhile with probiotics.
I attribute her getting them from a weakened immune system after she had a bad reaction to a vaccination (Fort Dodge accidentally given by a vet tech that didn't pay attention to my preference.
From what I've read and heard, most of the time they go away on their own unless a secondary infection develops, as in Jaycee's case. She's been through re-vaccination as well as another heat cycle and has never had another recurrence.
