I've been going through the same thing with my almost 6 year old RR Graham. It all started with a small spot in mid May and has now spread to both sides of his ridge on his lower back. The vet has tested him for hypothyroidism, staph, other bacterial infections, mites....all negative.
We just had another visit today and she is now thinking cyclic alopecia. We moved to the midwest this winter and have always lived in mostly sunny areas before , so I wonder if lack of sunlight during the winter months is contributing to this. The vet is recommending that I supplement with melatonin.
My boys have always been sun worshippers, so I don't doubt they are getting a lot less sun than they are used to.
