I'm certainly no expert, Amber, but I think we'll need more details on what was going on when these bites occurred. Did he draw blood? Were there any warning growls, etc? And what do you mean by "harsh" - does he hit the dog?
I'm so sorry this has happened. I know it's heartbreaking for all parties. There could be a physical reason, so it's good he's seeing a vet.
