As for a solution, the one that worked best for me is to take something very tempting, tie a thin string to it (i.e. fishing line), tie the other end of the line to a soda can filled with a few pennies. Put that tempting something on the edge of the counter with the can further in on the counter, out of sight. Then leave the room. When you hear the crash you can administer an appropriate scolding.
