I don't think it's a lack of respect, I think that they've done it enough times and enough times they've come out with something really, really yummy!
If it makes you feel better, my RR is a notorious counter thief. We basically play management and knock ourselves in the head when he gets something b/c usually it's b/c of our laziness. Caesar will blatently jump up on the counter if I turn my back for a second. And he can reach to the back of the counter so really nothing is out of reach (except the top of the fridge).
It is exasperating, but it does make us keep clean counters! And it can be amusing. Once he got a hold of bread in a loaf pan and was running around with it in his mouth - not eating it, just running around with a bread pan attached to his muzzle!
