I honestly think some just come that way. Two of mine are brothers (not littermates, though). The older one countersurfs....the younger one has seen him doing this his entire life and he has NEVER ONCE countersurfed for the 7+ years he's lived here.
Then there's Lilly. Her mother is notorious for going to the table to see what's for dinner, then sashaying into the kitchen to help herself. She also waits until the doorbell rings and her owner is busy there to ransack the pantry or trash bin. So...some of it is, I'm sure, is genetic.
Blame your breeder. 
Seriously, though, Nelson sounds like a great dog. Interesting is the right way to put it!
