I use stainless steel because it don't break 
Ceramic is good because it is a non-porous material, but I know there have been alot of warnings about looking where your ceramic feeding bowls come from. Apparently there is thought to be melamine in the paint. The ceramic bowls that I used to have (white with primary color paw prints around them) I saw at one time were said to contain the melamine.
