The "Thank you / Take it" game works well...but I am always the one to intiate and end it with MY choice of item or treat. Starting with something the dog already wants and already has doesn't teach that you are the leader nearly as quickly as when you produce the item of desire and have the dog ask politely for the item.
You can also play the trade game where the dog gives up his thing to get an even tastier treat AND gets his item back after asking politely by sitting/doing a downstay. Dog thinks, "Score! I just got BOTH things by being polite!" I particularly like this one because it is force-free method that can be as fun and silly as you make it, plus teaches good manners while it addresses resource guarding.
